2 Things Your Custody Attorney Might Want You To Do

Getting a divorce is never really an easy thing, and the fact that you have kids can make it even harder for the whole thing to happen. If you are trying to get custody of your child, you need to make sure that you have an attorney who works in child custody law on your side so that they can help you get the custody that you want for your kids. There are things that your lawyer would tell you to do so that they can help you in the best way.

Document Everything

One thing that your lawyer will want you to do is to document everything that happens. That means any calls between you and your former spouse as well as when they pick up the child for visitations, when they bring them home, what state the child was in, if they are taking their full visitation, and pretty much everything else that happens between you and your former spouse. You will also want to make sure that you save any and all text messages, voicemails, and emails. You can arrange to have those things sent to their own folders so that you don't even have to see them. When you do document everything, just jot everything down in a notebook. You don't have to do much more than that, and make sure that you are doing it in the moment or as close to it as possible.

Follow All Agreements

Your lawyer will also tell you that you should follow all current agreements as they are written unless certain circumstances occur, and they will be able to tell you what those circumstances are. Following the agreements that you and your former spouse have set up or that may have already been put in place due to mediation shows the courts that you are willing to work with your spouse and that you are willing to do everything you can to make sure that your child gets everything they need. If you are following the agreements and your spouse is not, that looks better for you. If you have any concerns, then you should make sure that you contact your attorney before you do anything.
